A recent study appeared to show that a college bachelor’s degree doesn’t carry as much weight as it used to. In fact, according to new statistics, people with college degrees have been laid off from former high paying technical fields in droves. Those of us who have lived with the belief that college degrees are necessary will dispute some of the new trends. And well we should.
Education in this technical age is necessary. Of course, beyond the necessity of learning the basics of any profession other requirements are also important. When this reporter was attending college statistics proved that those who even attended college would have a greater success of achieving a job than those without any form of college education. I can remember one friend who “bombed out” of college at the end of his freshman year and his college advisor said that the time he spent in college would help him through life. And that was obviously true.
I can remember numerous conversations with my schoolteacher mother. She was a firm believer in the necessity of a college education and helped steer me in getting a degree. But I remember asking her what would happen if everybody had a college education? And then she said the necessity for success would depend on other factors, like ability.
